Injection Therapy with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – A new therapy for healing tendon and ligament injuries
What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is concentrated blood plasma which contains a tremendous number of healing factors which can initiate and speed tissue repair and regeneration.
What is it Used For?
In our practice we use it for plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, general tendonitis and chronic ligament injuries.
How does PRP Therapy Work?
A small amount of your blood is drawn and processes with a centrifuge which concentrates the platelets and growth factors by about 500%. PRP is injected into the damaged area and stimulates a healing cascade. New collagen begins to develop and mature; creating strengthening and tightening of the damaged tissues.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
Usually 1-3 spaced 4-8 weeks apart. There is no limit to the number of injections you can receive.
Is PRP Right For Me?
If you have a tendon or ligament injury that has not improved with traditional methods, then PRP might be the solution. It will heal tissue with minimal or no scarring. However, PRP is not a quick fix. This therapy is stimulating the growth and repair of tendons and ligaments and requires time and rehabilitation.
Does Insurance Pay For PRP?
Some insurance companies, including workers compensation, may cover partial reimbursement after pre-authorization. Medicare does not cover this therapy.
